Tourism has a long tradition in Roses. The name of the town is owed to the "ancient Greeks ". They came across the Mediterranean see in their ships, liked the place and called it Rhode.

 

Still in the fifties a fishing village, Roses experienced  the tourism boom of the following years the strongest, compared to all other resorts of the northern Costa Brava.

    

 

 

Today Roses still has an important fishing fleet; its most important commercial activity  however is the tourism. Nostalgic people may regret this, - on one hand -, 

          
on the other hand, however, offers Roses  a variety of possibilities for the vacations of its guests.The sand beach of Roses extends over the bay, the "Bahia de Roses" until L'Escala.          
 

Also in the high season there are always enough places at the beach for everybody.

Boats and yachts up to 35 m find here on 400 anchorages its port. Sufficient renting places as well as transit places are at one's disposal.

          

The residential area Santa Margarida can be attained from Roses by foot over the beach promenade. It is particularly popular by boat owners because of its numerous channels with moorings at the houses.

 
 Roses has a number of well preserved witnesses from the past:  
  The citadel from the XVI. century with the monastery Santa Maria de Roses for example, or as the oldest witness the Dolmen " Creu d'en Cobertella ".

Outside the tourist season Roses  has about 15,000 permanent inhabitants, amongst them many foreigners who are either self employed or have chosen Roses as their retirement home. Many restaurants, hotels and other businesses are opened all the year. Especially popular and well frequented is the market on Sunday morning.
In summertime the number of inhabitants rises up to approximately 90,000 persons.    
    Who looks for peace, must literally search for it, but will find it nearby in the  small bays towards Cap Creus, on trips through the countryside or visiting the small villages close to Roses. Who looks for more vacation excitement, is also well provided. The municipality and many private enterprises organize numerous fiestas,  Jazz festivals, classical music and folkloristic events. In Roses always  something is going on...    
Numerous restaurants compete for the tourists. Discotheques, small bars and Bodegas provide for an exciting night life. The municipality has very strict noise regulations though, so  disturbances are not noticeable especially when one does not reside directly in the center of the town.    
The sport possibilities are almost unlimited. From tennis to go-kart, bicycle letting and boat rentals, everyone should find, what he is looking for...

Infrastructure.

Accommodation in guest houses and hotels of all categories and price classes as well as in holiday houses or apartments. These are offered through local agencies or rented directly by the owner. You should make sure what type of accommodation is required and then carefully choose the area. The shopping possibilities are almost unlimited, from the daily need to souvenirs or clothes everything is available. xspere.jpg (2812 Byte) The monastery Sant Pere de Rodes lies between Llançà and Port de la Selva and is considered as the most important building of the roman era in Catalonia. . By road it can be reached via Port de la Selva or from Vilajuïga. Many footpaths lead to the monastery as well, for example from Llançà or from Vall de Santa Creu.
