Roses has had a tourism tradition for a long time. The name of the town is owed to the ancient Greeks. They came across the Mediterranean Sea in their ships, liked the place and called it Rhode.

Until 1960 Roses was a small fishing village on the northern Costa Brava. Then, however, the village expanded, an exciting new centre and new, attractive residential quarters as Canyelles, Alamdabra, Puig Rom, Mas Fumats or Mas Busca were developed. The building activity was strongly supported by Roses’ wonderful location on the bay with much of the surrounding land elevated and oriented toward the sea. The sufficient inventory of land on slopes facing the sea favoured single-family houses and villas and did not encourage high-rise buildings. Today the areas surrounding Roses remain essentially residential.

Roses still has an important fishing fleet, but its most important commercial activity is tourism. Nostalgic people may regret the change from maritime businesses to tourism, but on the other hand Roses can offer a variety of options for guests on vacation.

Roses is also blessed with a number of well-preserved relics from the past:

Zitadelle von Roses The citadel from the XVI Century with the monastery Santa Maria de Roses for example, or the much older witness, the Dolmen "Creu d'en Cobertella."
Before and after the tourist season Roses has about 15,000 permanent inhabitants. Many are foreigners who are either self-employed or have chosen Roses as their retirement home. Many restaurants, hotels and other businesses are opened all the year. Especially popular and well frequented is the market on Sunday morning.
