Cal Governador, formerly known as "Manso Salleras", is a noble house dating back to the beginning of the 18th Century. It originally belonged to the Coll family and one of the descendants became the first of Franco's Civil Governors in the Gerona province. Hence its present name: "Governador" is Governor in Catalan.
Cal Governador spreads over 3,000 constructed square meters on three floors. The magnificent building is located in the small village of Borrassà. In 1910 it was completely restored by the famous "Novecentista" architect Rafael Massó. From his contribution, which even included the design of some truly unique pieces of furniture, we would like to highlight the dining room, the front sun dial, and the porch gallery which opens to the garden. The house is listed as an architectural heritage by the Catalan government.
Josep-Oriol Tomas, who personally runs the hotel and looks after the guests with the collaboration of his son Enric and Enric’s wife, Monica, bought the house in the late eighties. Josep Oriol’s first intention was to enjoy it with his large family. The idea of converting it in a hotel came much later. The conversion started with the four best bedrooms on the main floor, where the original decoration was preserved and the comfort of modern life (TV, telephone and bathroom with hydro-massage shower) incorporated.
In 2003, with another reconstruction of one part of the house, three new and modern rooms were added. They may not have the charm of the old style, but in exchange they all have a balcony and a view of the garden – as well as air conditioning and a Jacuzzi. Two of them can be interconnected.
In Cal Governador the guests have plenty of beautiful and tranquil places to relax and read a good book, to have an interesting talk or simply enjoy doing nothing: on the wonderful porch gallery, in the small pine forest or in the garden, where palm and citrus trees surround the lawns, or besides the fire on the living room. But there are also spaces for activities: table tennis on the gallery, board games in the living room, or the swimming-pool (private and without a life guard) that is filled with the well water that flows beneath the property. Cal Governador is the perfect setting for you to enjoy your stay in the Alt Emporda.
